- No routine male HPV test in the UK.
- Condoms help but do not eliminate transmission.
- Treating partners does not change a woman's clearance.
Is there an HPV test for men?
There is no routine, validated HPV test for men in the UK. Anal HPV testing is available for high-risk groups. Treating a male partner does not change a woman's outcome.
Condoms, oral sex and long-term partners
Condoms reduce but do not eliminate HPV transmission, because the virus lives on skin not covered by a condom. In long-term monogamous couples, both partners are almost always already exposed to the same strains by the time HPV is detected.
Frequently asked questions
Should my partner get vaccinated?
Gardasil 9 is licensed for men up to age 45 privately in the UK — a reasonable option for future partners.
Can we still have sex?
Yes. There is no medical reason to abstain unless there are active warts or bleeding after LEEP.
Did I 'give' it to my partner?
Unknowable in most couples — HPV can be dormant for years.
