Mummy Makeover Recovery: A Week-by-Week Guide

A gynaecologist and surgical team's honest week-by-week recovery guide for Mummy Makeover — what to expect at each stage, from hospital day to full return to normal activity.

A Mummy Makeover is a major combined operation. Recovery takes weeks, not days — and knowing the timeline in advance is one of the best predictors of a smooth experience. This is the honest week-by-week guide we give our own patients.

Your individual plan is set by Dr Berra and the plastic surgical team based on the specific combination of procedures.

Days 1–3: hospital

  • 2–3 nights in a JCI-accredited hospital
  • Pain managed with scheduled medication (not on-demand)
  • Compression garment fitted (essential for abdominoplasty and liposuction results)
  • First short walks with support — vital for reducing clot risk
  • Drains checked; removed usually day 2–3
  • Nutrition light, protein-focused, plenty of fluids

Week 1: hotel recovery in Istanbul

  • Stay in a partner hotel with coordinator support
  • Continue compression garment 24/7
  • Short walks every 2–3 hours during the day
  • No lifting anything over 2 kg
  • Sleep in a semi-reclined position (30–45 degrees)
  • No shower for abdominoplasty area — sponge bath only initially
  • First in-person post-op review

Week 2

  • Second in-person review before flying home
  • Compression garment continues (still 24/7 except washing)
  • Home flight typically permitted between day 10–14 with medical clearance
  • Continue short walks
  • No driving

Weeks 3–4

  • Compression garment: 24/7 for the first 4 weeks, then 12 hours/day for weeks 5–8
  • Desk-based work: many patients return at week 3–4
  • Physical work: not before week 6
  • Gentle walking uphill okay; running, cycling, weights: no
  • Swelling starts to reduce visibly

Weeks 5–8

  • Gradual return to gentle exercise (walking, gentle yoga)
  • Compression garment: 12 hours/day
  • Sexual intercourse: from 6–8 weeks depending on whether a gynaecological procedure was included
  • No swimming, no baths, no sauna yet

Weeks 8–12

  • Return to gym gradually — start with lower-body and cardio, add core work later
  • Swimming permitted (once incisions fully closed and no discharge)
  • Compression garment can usually be discontinued
  • Scars still red and firm — this is normal, they mature over 6–12 months

Beyond 12 weeks

  • Full activity restored for most patients
  • Scars soften and fade over 6–12 months (silicone scar therapy helps)
  • Final shape settles at 3–6 months post-op
  • Belly button and breast lift scars mature the longest

What matters for long-term result

  • Weight stability — the biggest single factor
  • No smoking — smoking after abdominoplasty risks wound healing
  • Realistic future pregnancy planning — an abdominoplasty is best done after your family is complete
  • Ongoing pelvic floor work if a gyn component was included

Red flags — contact your team immediately

  • Fever over 38°C
  • Increasing pain (not decreasing)
  • Redness spreading around any incision
  • Fluid collection (swelling that feels like a water balloon)
  • Chest pain or breathing difficulty (call emergency services)
  • Calf pain or swelling (possible clot — urgent)

Dr Berra's team is on WhatsApp for the duration of your recovery. This is the point of doctor-led aftercare, not "handed to a nurse".
