- Office work: 2–3 weeks.
- Standing work: 4–6 weeks.
- Heavy lifting work: 6–8 weeks and a phased return.
Office and remote work
Most women return to seated computer-based work at two to three weeks. Working from home in the first fortnight lets you take short lying-down breaks and avoids commuter fatigue.
Teaching, nursing, hospitality
Jobs that involve standing all day, moving quickly and occasional lifting typically need four to six weeks. A phased return — half days for the first week back — is helpful.
Warehouse, cleaning, care work, farming
Any role involving repeated heavy lifting requires six to eight weeks off, and a review before returning. Requesting light duties for the first fortnight back protects the repair.
UK sick notes
Your UK GP will issue a fit note (Med3) on the basis of the operation report and discharge letter. Ask for a detailed operative note before travelling home so your GP has the information they need.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a note from my UK GP?
Yes, if you are off for more than seven days. Bring your operation report to that appointment.
Can I work from home from day 3?
Short bursts are fine but full days at a desk should wait until week two.
